Allwinner A33, World's First $4 Quad Core Tablet Processor, Now in Mass Production


After its announcement during Computex 2014, Allwinner A33 has now kicked off mass production in July. Quad-core tablets based on A33 are now available to end users worldwide in various resolutions and sizes (6.95", 7", 7.85", etc), and also come with different functions (ATV, DTV, 2G, etc), priced from $30 to $60.

Targeted at the entry-level tablet market, A33 is a quad-core processor combining four power-efficient Cortex-A7 CPUs with the proven Mali400MP2 GPU architecture. A33 includes the following features:

  • Ÿ1080p video playback and capture

Unique SmartColor Display
Intraditional color adjustment algorithms without human skin protection function, the human skin is adjusted together with other areas of an image, which makesskin look over-saturated and unnatural.
 
SmartColor, unique to Allwinner processors, is a kind of image post-processing technology used to deliver more gorgeous and eye-pleasing visual effects by enhancing image saturation and providing skin tone protection.

Robust Video Playback, Outstanding FHD Compatibility
Video processing has always been a competitive edge of Allwinner processors.  Allwinner A33 packs anew-generationvideo engine that supports 1080p@60fps video playback and capture.

Results from Antutu Video Tester, a tool released by Antutu to rapidly test the video process capability, show that tablets based on Allwinner A33consistently rateat about 500 points(higher scores indicate better video process capability). In addition, A33 tablets get over 90% passing rates (more than 90% video formats listed can be processed), while maincompetitors can only decode about 40%.

Ultra Low Power Consumption: 300 hour standby
A33 achieves low power through a balanced combination of several features: ultra energy-efficient Cortex-A7 CPU cores, an advanced fabrication process, optimized DVFS technology, and a unique Talking Standby mode that allows extremely low power consumption during voice calls.

Test results indicate that the power consumption of tablets based on A33 quad-core is lower than its quad-core competitors, and even lower than most dual cores. When usinga 4000mAh battery, tablets based on A33 can standby for more than 300 hours, equivalent to 6.5 hours of local 1080p video playback.

Allwinner's first 64-bit tablet processor to hit the market soon


With the rising requirement for 64-bit application processors, Allwinner Technology today is announcing that its first 64-bit tablet processor should hit the market by end of 2014.  A 64-bit development board should also be ready for demo during the Hong Kong Electronics Fair in October.

As a member of Linaro organization, the Linaro builds of the AOSP for 64-bit ARMv8-A platform “Juno” and will be a key building block to enable Allwinner to offer a range of differentiated solutions across multiple markets.

Allwinner A80T based Onda V989 now shipping


The first tablet based on the Allwinner A80 is now shipping out of China! It’s the Onda V989, using the nice ultra slim iPad Air display, this tablet looks extremely sleek and nice. Here Allwinner is showing off some of their new Smart features, including the cool “always on” sensor that wakes the device up with just a double-touch of the display (similar to LG knock-on feature, and similar somewhat to previous Moto X sensor fusion stuff), they also have a few head-tracking Smart functions that they added in settings, taking advantage of their hardware accelerated head-tracking feature: Smart Pause pauses video when you look away from the screen, Smart Rotate does not rotate the screen when you for example lie down on the bed, Smart Stay means the screen always stays on if you are still looking at it when the dimming setting kicks in (it overrides screen dimming).

Allwinner UltraOcta A80 processor packs a PowerVR Series6 GPU with 64 cores


First previewed at CES 2014, the Allwinner UltraOcta A80 processor is now making its formal debut at MWC 2014. The full set of specifications includes an eight-core big.LITTLE HMP (GTS) CPU paired with a PowerVR G6230 GPU, providing some of the best horsepower for graphics and compute available right now.  

Allwinner is one of the leading semiconductor companies worldwide, serving the mobile market with a wide range of high performance, low power products that have been instrumental in enabling the emergence of numerous low cost devices, including tablets, phablets, portable game consoles, set-top boxes and many others.

The company’s first two SoCs with PowerVR graphics, the Allwinner A31 and A31s, were a hit in emerging markets and were the driving force behind a new wave of affordable mobile devices for most of 2013.  More recently, 4G tablets based on the Allwinner A31 and A31s were shown during CES and both chipsets were given a boost in system performance thanks to an update to the latest Android 4.4 KitKat operating system. 2014 is set to be an exciting year for Allwinner. Their new UltraOcta A80 processor offers a significant boost in graphics performance. Whereas A31 and A31s integrated a PowerVR SGX544MP2 GPU, UltraOcta is upgraded to a PowerVR G6230 graphics processor. This means a twofold increase in graphics and compute performance as well as an update in feature set.  


The PowerVR G6230 GPU is based on the Rogue architecture, which has been designed to support a variety of APIs, including OpenGL ES Next and 3.0, OpenCL 1.x, Renderscript, and DirectX 10.

OpenGL ES Next is perhaps the most interesting of all, considering that it brings very exciting features to OpenGL ES 3.0: compute shaders, indirect draw commands, enhanced texture functionality and more. Since the PowerVR Rogue architecture has been designed with a forward-thinking approach for ultimate efficiency, Imagination has been one of the first mobile GPU vendors to announce our support for this new standard. Consumers can rest assured they are getting the best possible graphics engine available, which will be able to run the latest fully-featured applications.

PowerVR support for DirectX 10 enables OEMs/ODMs looking to build Windows RT tablets to access the best GPU available at the moment. And considering Allwinner has always had a cost-conscious approach to apps processors, end users can now have access to more affordable devices which make no compromises when it comes to cutting-edge, low power graphics technology.

64 cores ticking inside the PowerVR G6230 GPU
Perhaps the most exciting aspect of the PowerVR GPU inside the Allwinner UltraOcta A80 processor is what’s under the hood, so let’s take a brief look at its architecture.

PowerVR G6230 has two shading clusters, each with 32 FP32 ALU cores. This adds up to a total of 64 cores which are able to provide the required GFLOPS needed to crunch through the most demanding graphics and compute applications.

But the performance-optimized PowerVR G6230 GPU also has a dedicated FP16 engine designed to bring superior performance to most modern applications and UIs. This mix of FP32 and FP16 units actually takes the number of compute units way beyond 64 and provides the perfect balance for high performance, low power shading.  


To complement the raw GFLOPS performance, PowerVR G6230 has a number of features designed to decrease memory bandwidth and reduce system power consumption. These features are best described by one term: PVR3C (PowerVR triple compression). PVR3C includes finely-tuned hardware technologies which enable lossy texture compression (PVRTC1/2 at 2bpp and 4bpp resolutions), lossless image compression (PVRIC) and lossless geometry compression (PVRGC) support.
 
Finally, the PowerVR Rogue architecture has been upgraded to a scalar-based processing enginethat sets it apart from the vector engines used in competing GPU designs. There are numerous advantages in going to a scalar processing architecture, including higher resource utilization and easier optimal software development. This ease of development benefits both our compiler teams and developers, since it no longer matters if they vectorise their software or not.

Allwinner Joins Linaro as a Founding Member of the Linaro Digital Home Group



Allwinner Technology Invests in Open Source Community by Joining Linaro



Allwinner Technology, a worldwide leader in application processor design, today at Linaro Connect Asia 2014 (LCA14) in Macau announced that it has joined Linaro as a founding member of the Linaro Digital Home Group (LHG).
 
Allwinner has contributed to open source projects since open-sourcing the single-core Allwinner A10’s code in 2011. Joining Linaro as a founding member of the Linaro Digital Home Group will enable Allwinner to better ensure open source support for its chips and reduce kernel fragmentation.

The 2014 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) will take place in Las Vegas from January 7 to January 10. Allwinner A23-Powered Devices Hit the Shelfs


Allwinner Technology, a leading fabless processor design company, today announced that tablets powered by its latest A23 dual core processor have already entered the market and hit the shelf, just one month after the official launch of A23 processor. 

Since its release, the A23 dual core processor has drawn the attention of many tablet OEMs as well as brands at home and abroad due to its stunning system performance at competitive price. The A23 processor runs at up to 1.5GHz, and its high on-chip integration of peripherals like MIPI DSI reduces total platform component count to less than 260. 

Now, brands such as HP, Teclast, Onda, Haier, and OEM manufacturers such as Neostra, Ampe, and solution houses such as iNet have released tablets based on A23, and more can be expected in the near future including tablets supporting 2G function. Download LiveSuit Pack v1.11


This archive contains the flash tool LiveSuit v1.11 and Widows USB drivers needed when upgrading Allwinner A10 / A13 devices. You can download LiveSuit Pack v1.11 from here, here or here. + MediaFire Mirror.



Now, before anything, makes sure your tablet / android device is charged up, 100% charge is nice.

Once extracted, and before attaching your tablet to your PC, run the file '
LiveSuitPack_1.11.exe' from within the Livesuit folder. This should install a new device on your system (VID_1f3a_PID_efe8). This device may show with an exclamation mark in Windows Device Manager, this doesn't matter and can be ignored. Now edit the firmware name (.img file) that you have downloaded so that there are no Chinese or Foreign characters within the filename.

Without attaching your tablet to your PC run 'LiveSuit.exe' from within the Livesuit folder. You should get an application like in the image above. You will be asked if you want to be guided through the process, select no.
Click on the leftmost icon (a cube), browse to your downloaded firmware image, and select it.

Turn the tablet completely off. The tablet should be off throughout the next process. Hold down the power button for ten or fifteen seconds if you're not sure, just make sure it is off. Charged up, but off. Connect the USB cable to your tablet and hold down the volume+ button, keep the button pressed.

Connect the other end of the USB cable to your computer (keep that volume+ button pressed - I know, it hurts by now)

Using your third hand, straight after attaching the cable, and whilst still holding down the volume+ button, start pressing the tablet power button repeatedly (approx 1 press per second for 10 seconds is enough). This procedure puts the tablet into update mode.

After a few seconds a window will pop up on your PC asking if you want to perform a forced firmware update. You can stop the pain and release the volume+ at this point. Select yes. You will be asked if you're sure. Select yes.

The update will start and will take approx 3 minutes to complete. You will see a % complete progress bar during the process and will get a dialog saying OK when it's done. It is a non-linear progress bar, so even though it appears to be stuck at times, don't panic.

Turn your tablet on and you will have the new firmware, be happy/sad based on the fact that it is better/worse than your previous firmware.

As always, Allwinner is working closely with its partners to ensure that A23 tablet designs are stable and ready for market.

“Competition in the tablet space has heated up this year, and OEM brands need better processor choices in order to boost margins and gain market share,” noted Jack Lee, Director of Marketing at Allwinner. “The dual core A23 processor will help tablet brands win more business in highly-competitive emerging markets and in growing markets like educational tablets”. 

Power, performance, and cost are critical factors to winning market share. Tablets powered by the A23 are highly cost-competitive, thanks to Allwinner’s expertise in highly-integrated processor design. High on-chip integration of peripherals like MIPI DSI, LVDS, USB OTG/Host, etc reduces overall system costs and tablet cost.

Allwinner’s core partners are scheduled to start delivering dual core A23 tablet samples in October. Early models include 7”, 7.85”, and 9” form factors with LCD resolutions of 800x480, 1024x600, 1024x768, and 1280x800.
Additionally, 2.75G (EDGE) 7” dual core tablets will be available for emerging markets like Brazil, India, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and more.

5s Speedy Boot! Allwinner Releases New Android 4.2.2 Firmware for Quad-Core A31/A31s


Recently, Allwinner Technology released new Android 4.2.2 firmware for its quad-core A31/A31s platforms for user experience enhancement: efficient multi-tasking, fluid UI rotation and transition, 5s speedy boot, 2s speedy shutdown, 4600 scores for 3D Mark , 60fps for Epic Citadel, and 7mA power consumption in standby mode, etc. These features will soon be implemented by brands and ODM/OEM partners of Allwinner.
